Delhi gangrape case: Court orders execution of 4 convicts on 3 March
Feb. 18, 2020

Issuing fresh death warrants to four convicts in the 2012 Delhi gangrape and murder case, a Delhi court on Monday ordered their execution on 3 March at 6 am.

The Patiala House court had on 31 January stayed "till further orders" execution of the four convicts -- Mukesh Kumar Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma and Akshay Kumar -- lodged in Tihar Jail.

Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana pronounced the order after a detailed hearing.

Pawan’s advocate informed the court that he is yet to file curative petition in Supreme Court or a mercy plea before the President against the death sentence awarded to him.

The counsel for Vinay submitted before the court that he is on hunger strike in Tihar jail. His lawyer claimed Vinay had been assaulted in jail and sustained head injuries.

Pleading against the death sentence, his lawyer said Vinay was suffering from acute mental illness and should not be hanged. The court directed the Tihar jail superintendent to take appropriate care of Vinay as per law.

Mukesh and Vinay told the court they did not want to be represented by their respective lawyers following which the court appointed advocate Ravi Qazi to represent them.
