International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2020:
May 30, 2020

The United Nations General Assembly appointed May 29 as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is celebrated on May 29 every year. On this day, people pay tribute to military, police or civilians who served in UN Peacekeeping programs and operations. The dedication and courage of these personnel are applauded and those who lost their lives in keeping peace are honoured.

This is the date when the first United Nations peacekeeping mission, United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) had begun its operations in the Middle East in 1948.

The theme for International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2020 is 'Women in Peacekeeping: A Key to Peace' to mark the 20th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

The United Nations has called for development of the role and contribution of women in its operations, including the uniformed peacekeepers. Its focus is on fostering the participation of women in peacekeeping as well as within the society. They serve as police officers, troops, pilots, military observers, and other uniformed and civilian posts, including in command positions.
